Headed out overnight for another New Year’s ski trip. Destination: Beaver Creek – my absolute favorite place to ski. Looks like my Top 50 Songs of 2009 will have to wait ’til 2010…. wow that’s strange to type.

If I find some time during the trip, I’ll begin another set of Download Code Contests. I’ve got 3 album downloads available from my Top 10 this year: JTE’s Midnight at the Movies, Deer Tick’s Born On Flag Day, and Conor Oberst’s Outer South. Be sure to check back for those.

For now, here are some songs to fit the mood:

Reckless Kelly – Snowfall
Fleet Foxes – Blue Ridge Mountains
Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings – Snowin’ On Raton (live)
White Antelope (Robin Pecknold) – Wild Mountain Thyme

New Digs…….

Most of the music that’s recently been added to my library has actually been older stuff (thanks to the folks at Cover Lay Down, Setting The Woods On Fire, and Ceci N’est Pas un Blog) – Buddy Holly, The Beatles, Creedence, Emmylou……..

i have, however, picked up a couple new discs – some in the mail and some digitally.

Here’s some of the best new additions:

mp3: The Dedringers – Sideman Blues
pick up Sweetheart of the Neighborhood FREE!!
The lead-off and stand-out track from The Dedringers first full-length disc.
“i used to have a job as a sideman/playin‘ with a blues band/down on the coast/
i played Mr. Cale/rockin‘ the blues scale/bendin‘ out the notes”

more Dedringers here.

mp3: Reckless Kelly – God Forsaken Town
buy Bulletproof (2008)

Known for their in-your-face, roots-rock, Reckless Kelly has long since set the standard for bands that fall somewhere between Rock and Country. Somehow, though, i end up diggin‘ the more mid-tempo, lyrically driven songs Willie Braun and band deliver so effortlessly. This one is from the band’s latest (7th) release.

mp3: Ben Sollee – How To See The Sun Rise
buy Learning to Bend (2008)
By now, everyone has heard Ben’s cover of Sam Cooke’s A Change Is Gonna Come. The other songs from this acoustic cello specialist’s debut album are just as moving. Ben got his start in The Sparrow Quartet – Abigail Washburn’s band.

These next two songs are from bands who have been raved about all over the music blog community – and i hate to jump on the bandwagon, but they really are good. i don’t own either album, but from the small sampling of tunes i have from each, i’m definitely thinkin‘ about it.

mp3: Fleet Foxes – He Doesn’t Know Why
buy Fleet Foxes (2008)
Sub Pop has once again turned out an amazing band. Along the lines of Band of Horses, The Shins, and Iron & Wine, the cosmic vocals from Fleet Foxes will take you to another world.

mp3: Mason Jennings – Fighter Girl
buy In The Ever (2008)
The dry deliver and literal songwriting of Mason Jennings is actually his appeal.

Super Photo Post: Costa Rica

i’ve just about finished going through the hundreds of pictures taken while in Costa Rica.
If you like a laid-back place with lots to do, and some of the most amazing scenery – get your ass to Costa Rica. The locals are super-friendly, everyone accepts the American dollar, cabs and vans are cheap and plentiful, and – according to our driver, César – every town, no matter how small, has at least one bar, and one soccer field. They got their priorities lined up down there.

So to show off my newfound hobby of photography (my family kept begging me to take pictures of them, but i feel that people just mess up the shot – trees don’t blink), i’ve decided to post some of the best pictures of Costarrican scenery with a related song (or two) to accompany it.

(pictures are thumbnails – click them for full size)

mp3: Charlie Robison – Sunset Boulevard

mp3: Old 97’s – She Loves The Sunset

mp3: Creedence Clearwater Revival – Run Through The Jungle
mp3: Old Crow Medicine Show – Big Time In The Jungle

mp3: Cross Canadian Ragweed – Flowers
mp3: The Great Divide – Wildflower

mp3: The Avett Brothers – If It’s The Beaches
mp3: Ryan Adams – Waves Crashing

mp3: Squeeze – Tempted (by the Fruit of Another)
mp3: Bright Eyes – Lime Tree

mp3: South Austin Jug Band – Falls So Fast
mp3: Reckless Kelly – Floodwater

mp3: The Rolling Stones – Monkey Man
The Beatles – Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me & My Monkey

Stay tuned for the first-ever
This Mornin’….. guest post.

Righteous Kill…..

i don’t normally talk about movies here at This Mornin‘….. but why not shake things up a bit? i’m workin‘ on a new computer and just revamped some graphics and colors on my page (new comp has Photoshop, so expect me to go a little crazy getting to know how to use it).

Tonight i came across something that really interested me. For the first time since Heat (1995) Al Pacino and Robert De Niro will co-star in a movie.

“Righteous Kill”

The only other time the two appeared on the bill together was for The Godfather: Part II, but they didn’t even share a scene. In Heat, they only had like… 2 scenes together. This time, in an indie film directed by Jon Avnet, these two cinematic badasses team up and share the screen for most of the film. Veteran NYC Detectives, Pacino and De Niro are after a vigilante killer who some say is doing their job for them. Just watch……

mp3: The Rolling Stones – Sympathy For The Devil

It’s due in theaters in September.

From that trailer, the theme of the movie seems to center around the power of the gun, so here are some fitting tunes:

mp3: Reckless Kelly – Sixgun
mp3: The Rosewood Thieves – Silver Gun
buy Rise and Shine (2008)

mp3: Cross Canadian Ragweed – Hammer Down
buy Soul Gravy (2004)

mp3: The Black Keys – Just a Little Heat
buy Magic Potion (2006)

mp3: The Felice Brothers – Hey Hey, Revolver
** interesting note about this song – Rumor has it that The Felice Brothers did some recording for this album in everything from school buses to leaky chicken coops and tried to get some real rain sounds and so on. i read that the pop you hear about 35 seconds in was a very near lightning strike. Seems plausible to to me, cause if you listen close you’ll hear thunder just a few seconds afterwards…..

Instrumental Interlude…….

Ah, after a couple grueling weeks, i finally get to sit back and relax for a night. And there’s no better way to do that than with some easy listening – not the genre – but the true definition of easy listening - pure instrumental music.

i haven’t done one of these since my first week of blogging. i was listening to Cold Roses today, and thought to myself that i would dig that album just as much had it been completely instrumental. That’s not to say that Ryan’s lyrics aren’t as impressive as a two-ton anvil – they are – but The Cardinals are simply as tight a band as i’ve ever heard. With Cold Roses, specifically, each and every song pops through the speakers with that inital lick from Ryan, J.P. Bowersock, or Cindy Cashdollar. An amazing album – i can’t wait to get to it on my Ryan Adams Spotlight, but that’s for another day.

So, i came home and dug through my instrumental tunes and came up with these for you today. i’ve got a strictly bluegrass instrumental playlist as well as a general one – there’s a couple from both.

mp3: Cory Morrow – Sunday Drivin’

mp3: Adrienne Young – Happy Ending
buy Room To Grow (2007)

mp3: Reckless Kelly – Wicked Twisted Road (reprise)

mp3: South Austin Jug Band – Po Boys In The Glovebox

mp3: Mike McClure Band – Intro (Mis Llaves)
If this song feels like it leaves you hangin’ – that’s because it’s an intro that leads straight into another song on Everything Upside Down. I promise not to make you wait for too long – i’ll get that Mike McClure profile done soon – and that song will definately be on it. By the way, it’s called ‘Open My Door’ – pretty clever intro title, if you ask me……. (**edit – Part 1 of the Mike McClure Artist Spotlight is up)

the song links are dead, but you can check out my first Instrumental Interlude here.

i was gonna write this post on time, but…..
